Wine & Spirit Article of the Year |
This award seeks to recognise a journalist or a group of journalists who have written an outstanding article, which reflects and promotes the quality, variety and depth of the wines and wine trends around the world in the majority of its editorial content.
The submitted article must be published in any English print or electronic medium (magazine, newspapers) for the first time in any of the above participating countries between 2 November 2004 and 1 November 2005.

Ned Goodwin's passion and knowledge are contagious and communicated in a free and irreverent albeit, informative fashion. As a child, Goodwin saw wine on the dinner table due to his parents` strong culinary sensibility, yet it was not until began drinking beer and hard liquor in Europe, that Goodwin sought shelter in the glories of wine.
Ned began to consume literature, take notes, taste religiously and travel extensively throughout the wine-world. His experience as a consultant for the Australian Embassy in Paris, sales-person for the Australian Wine Centre and various retail outlets; and manager and wine-buyer for numerous restaurants in New York culminated in his position from 2000-2002 as one of three sommeliers at "Veritas"- a Manhattan restaurant with arguably the world's finest wine-list. Goodwin went on to host his own Japanese television show on wine, appear as guest-lecturer on “Wine Marketing” at one of Japan`s most prestigious universities, Keio; and he frequently appears in and writes for numerous journals including the New York Times, WINART, The Japan Times, Metropolis, Brutus, Dining and Vinotheque magazine in Japan where he currently serves as the Wine Director and buyer for one of the world`s largest restaurant group, Global Dining. This employee has seen him travel to France, Australia, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Austria, Germany and most recently Greece, to source wines of distinguished identity, honesty and value for the Japanese market.

Tan Twan Eng with a legal background left Malaysia in the year 2000 for South Africa, where he furthered his legal studies. While living in Cape Town, he became interested in culinary matters as well as wines and cheeses. Since then, he has written for several publications and is currently writing a book.

Ch'ng Poh Tiong is the publisher of The Wine Review, South-East Asia's oldest wine magazine (since 1991) and the world's first annual Guide to Bordeaux in Chinese (since 2000). Ch'ng's articles have also appeared in other magazines, including l'Amateur de Bordeaux of France, United Kingdom's Harper's, World of Fine World, and Decante. Ch'ng's is the Regional Chairman: Middle East, Far East & Asia, for Decanter magazine's World Wine Awards. In 2004, Ch'ng also organized the first-ever sommelier seminar in China. He was also Conference Chairman of the inaugural Wine For Asia 2003 exhibition held in Singapore. Although a lawyer by training, Ch'ng also works as a wine consultant. His clients include FairPrice & Liberty Supermarkets, Conrad Centennial Singapore and Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur.

Jen Shek Voon

Always an aficionado of fine wine, Jen Shek Voon is currently Prestige Indonesia's wine correspondent. Shek Voon is a member of the International Wine & Food Society since 1985, the Commanderie de Bordeaux Singapore since 1987 and the Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs Singapour since 1989. In 1999, he founded the Slow Food Convivium Society (Singapore). Shek Voon's extensive knowledge of wines has earned him much standing in the wine industry. He was invited to become a member of the tasting panel for the Singapore Tatler Guide to Singapore Best Restaurant in 2001 and 2002 and the Wine and Dine Best Restaurant Guide from 2000 to 2002. Shek Voon was also the presenter at the World Gourmet Summit 2002 wine masterclass for the wines of USA and a judge for the World Gourmet Summit 2002 wine scholarship.

Mike Meyer first went to China in 1995 with the Peace Corps, where he lived for two years in the Sichuan countryside, training English teachers. A Minnesota native, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of California-Berkeley. From 2004-2005, Meyer was a Blakemore Fellow at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he studied urban planning and architecture. A 2005 Lowell Thomas Award winner, Meyer's writing has appeared in Time, Smithsonian, the New York Times, Financial Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune, among others. He is currently on assignment for National Geographic. His first book, Echo Wall: The Last Days of Old Beijing will be published by Walker/Bloomsbury next year.
