World Gourmet Summit presents World Gourmet Awards - The Hawker Awards Series. The hawker version of the World Gourmet Awards (WGA) aims to recognize the place with one of the most diverse and extensive menus on the planet, the hawker centers. This unique combination of food, space and community has evolved into a microcosm of Singapore’s multicultural society, with stalls selling a wide diversity of dishes. Over the decades, these dishes evolved to become the distinctive local dishes that we love and form an integral part of Singapore’s food heritage.
Being Singapore’s first nomination to the UNESCO’s Representative List, hawker culture was repeatedly highlighted as an intangible cultural asset that best represents Singapore’s multicultural heritage, with hawker centers viewed as important community spaces.
This Hawker Culture is made possible by the hawkers themselves, who devoted time, sweat and tears, honing their culinary skills, creating humble, delicious and affordable cuisines that keep Singaporeans going daily.
It is the desire of PKH’s founder, Mr. Peter Knipp and Dr. Leslie Tay of @ieatishoootipost, alongside 5 other well-renowned food bloggers and chefs (Damien Tan, Dr. Aaron Nathanael Ho @RubbishEatRubbishGrow, Maureen @MissTamChiak, Derrick Tan @SgFoodOnFoot and Chef Bob @chefbob.sg) coming together in a collaborative effort in search to the most deserving hawkers and award 15 hawkers this first season.
