After this educational trip, I am now more familiar with the names and styles of each Italian grape varietal and what they are used for. Some of the wine legislations were explained clearer when I met the wine makers in person, widening my knowledge of Italian wines and helping me provide better recommendations to the restaurant diners as well as improve my performance and duty as a sommelier.

Hosting Winery’s Profile: Sartori di Verona (Veneto)
The family took its first step in 1898, when Pietro Sartori bought Villa Maria, a vineyard with a small cellar attached, in the heart of the Veneto region’s Valpolicella district, to assure a source of high quality wine for his hotel. This marked the advent of Sartori di Verona. A few years later, Pietro’s son, Regolo, built the winery into the family’s core business, and by the 1950s Regolo’s two sons expanded the winery and brought these wines to international recognition, exporting them around the world.

Having been around since 1880, Ascheri has created vineyards with its focus on the most suitable selections in order to get the most out of each vine, which is matched with less vigorous rootstocks, with the harvest being collected by hand.

The name Lvnae is inspired by the town of Luni, an ancient Etruscan and Greek port, consecrated to the goddess Selene by the Greeks (Luna, for the Romans). The first Luna settlement was founded by the Romans in 177 B.C. Lvnae Bosoni wine production is rooted in the ancient history of this land and its peoples, the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, from whom it has inherited a great winemaking tradition.

Castello ColleMassari was founded in 1998 and is part of the Montecucco DOC area in Upper Maremma, a territory which is ideal for the growing of Sangiovese. It is situated between the DOCG areas of Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano. The first vintage was produced in 2000.

Located in Pianetto, and designed according to the principles of optimization of natural resources, it was built on the hillside to take advantage of the thermal stability of the earth, which is ideal for storing wines. Organised on 4 levels, it allows the grapes to follow a natural path from the entrance at the top floor to the underground barrel cellar, using the force of gravity and in turn preserving the wine.
