Chef of the Year
This award seeks to recognise an individual
who is directly involved in restaurant operations
in Singapore, and has consistently excelled in the
culinary art as well as provided for excellent dining
experiences. The nominee must be a Singaporean, Permanent
Resident, or a non-Singaporean residing in Singapore.
He / she must have been working for a Singapore-based
organisation or a franchise / branch that is located
in Singapore for at least a minimum of one year (as
at the time of nomination).

Justin Quek embarked
on his expedition towards culinary excellence in his
career at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which sponsored
his training at the Singapore Hotel Association Training
and Educational Centre (SHATEC) and Oriental Bangkok.
His desire to improve his skills led him to Europe,
where he gained experience from some of the most excellent
establishments, such as Hotel de Crillon, Jean Bardet,
Hotel du Centenaire and L'Oasis in France. Quek's return
to Singapore brought him to greater heights as he joined
in partnership with three others to found the critically
acclaimed Les Amis Group in 1993. Some of the awards
in his fanfare of gold are 'Best Achievement Award for
Chosen Vocation' by Rotary Club West, and 'Best Chef
of the Year Award' at the inaugural gastronomy 'Oscars',
WGS Awards of Excellence 2001. |

'Passionate'
is the word that some have used to describe executive
chef and owner of Saint Pierre, Emmanuel Stroobant.
Branded for his creativity and relentless innovation
when designing the restaurant's menu to reflect the
four seasons, Stroobant constantly revamps the menu
to evoke an elevated sensorial experience. Having trained
under top chefs, from one to three Michelin-starred
restaurants, such as Pierre Romeyer Maison De Bouche,
Barbizon and Chene Madame, Stroobant's ability to create
sumptuous delicacies surfaced since two years ago when
he founded Saint Pierre. For his indisputable commitment
towards culinary and service brilliance, Stroobant has
been awarded 'Best Apprentice Chef of Belgium' in 1987
and 1988, and has achieved the glamorous title of 'Chef
of the Year' at the WGS Awards of Excellence 2002. |

As director of kitchens
for the Tung Lok Group of Restaurants, Sam Leong is
the maestro behind the scrumptious and irresistible
creations showcased at Jade, JING and My Humble House.
One of the biggest influences on his exciting Chinese
cuisine is Leong's work attitude and aptitude, which
was instilled by his father - a reputable chef in Malaysia
- since young. His relentless persistence to achieve
absolute quality and endless strive towards creating
the finest of cuisines has won him adulation at the
Wolfgang-Lazaroff American Wine & Food Festival
for his mouth-watering mocha ribs. Leong has also been
given the honour and the privilege to host two distinguished
political leaders at Jade - former United States president,
Bill Clinton, and Singapore prime minister, Goh Chok
Tong. |
