Sommelier of the Year
This award seeks to recognise an individual, who
possesses an in-depth knowledge of wines, capable
of delivering excellent wine service (salesmanship
and wine recommendation) to enhance the dining experience.
The nominee must be a Singaporean, Permanent Resident,
or a non-Singaporean residing in Singapore. He / She
must have been working for a Singapore-based organisation
or a franchise / branch that is located in Singapore
for at least a minimum of one year (as at the time
of nomination).

Having joined Les Amis
as chef sommelier in 1999, Aby Tan took charge of satisfying
the sophisticated palates of many guests through the
restaurant's award-winning 1,500-label wine list. On
his dazzling profile are certificates from related professional
courses - all levels of wine courses from SOPEXA, a
certificate and a higher certificate in wine and spirits
awarded by the UK Wines & Spirits Board. These are
the fruit of his labour for knowledge in wines and utmost
professionalism. Tan has also twice won the 'Screwpull
Sommelier of the Year' award during the WGS Awards of
Excellence in 2001 and 2002, and is nominated for a
third year in a row for his unimpeachable strive towards
greater heights. |

Leon Tan has put himself
on Asia's gastronomic calendar where he coordinates
the annual Raffles Wine & Food Experience. His teenage
endeavours into the world of wine and sommeliers, since
1994, have been well approved. Tan has taken great strides
from his stepping-stone as a commis sommelier at Les
Amis to his present eminence as pillar of Raffles Hotel's
wine cellar. Under his care, Raffles Hotel garnered
second place at the 2002 Singapore Wine Options event,
organised by the Regent Singapore and The Cellar Door.
In commendation of his achievements, he has once again
been nominated as a 'Screwpull Sommelier of the Year'
finalist for the third year running. |
